If we apply “It’s better to give than to receive” in our business, we will go a long way. And, for the most part, good marketers do exactly that. Many of you know this, but others need to refresh the basics.

So, let’s apply this to the internet business…

What does the Bible start out with ‘give’ and not ‘receive’? I think it’s because it will get the ball rolling. If we wait for the other guy to start giving, no one would start first.

To ‘give’ is also excellent sales advice. To ‘give’ builds trust in clients or potential customers. When you have a website, you should have something free for them, something that is useful. When you do this, they might think, ‘Hey, this guy gave me some valuable advice.’

When you have a newsletter that you’d like people to sign up for, many marketers ask for the person’s name and email FIRST.

Bad idea!
Offer on your website for everyone a good download product, for example. When they see that, they will see that you are worth giving their email address to.

If you take a look at ‘squeeze pages’ what do many of them do? They want you to give them your email address first.

A good marketer should be giving views something first.

Squeeze pages tells very little, if anything about a product, yet the owner of the site wants you to give them your email address. When I go to pages like this, and nothing interesting is given me, I don’t give them my email address.

You don’t give your phone number to a strange, so it is with your email address – when no trust is build up.

On your website, you should have more than one good article there or product they can download before you ask for their email address. After all, one article is very little to expect to build trust on, wouldn’t you agree?

Notice the pop ups that come on the website about 5 seconds after you go there? They ask you for your subscription to their newsletter. You don’t have time to know one single thing about what their site is about and if they have anything valuable content – yet they want your email address?

I say, ‘No way. I’ve got to get to know them more.’ And if they don’t give you time to learn more, I know they are just one click away.

There are a ton of free eBooks and other programs out there where you are given permission to give out and even sell. So, there is no shortage of material to give out.

Now, about the ‘Receiving’

In order for someone to give, there has to be another person to receive. This is obvious. Don’t feel ashamed to take something if something is offered to you. Take it with thanks, of course.
I don’t know about you, but for me, it makes me feel good if someone takes something I want to give and they give thanks back.

Sumker’s Jam

Remember Sumker’s Jam? They were a very popular and profitable company. They had a good jam, true, but something else that made them stand out. Do you know what it was?
They over delivered.

When on the weight of the product, by law you have to have that much in there. With Sumker’s they always had more than the weight inside. People don’t complain when they get too much. Think of that when your selling a product or service.

Summary:

Give something of value before you ask people to part with even their email address. And make sure you over delivery if you are selling something.

When you ‘give’ first, the Universe will see that you ‘receive’ and be rewarded.

If you are in need for content – whether it be writing emails, forums and blogs – you shouldn’t be. There is a ton of stuff out there – for free.

Some people would recommend that you send off to sites that offer writers for hire. One such site is elance.com but this is a waste of money. Firstly, it costs about $10 or more for an article and you only get about 300-400 words. Secondly, you don’t know what you’ll get except the subject you write about.

Some sources for free content:

EBooks
Article directories
Article generators

There are a lot of ebooks out there where you can have private label rights (PLR) that you can take info from. So, start clipping and pasting. But I’d advise you to add your own thoughts, too. However, if you are not good at it,  and the article is well written – don’t mess around with it.

In article directories, the sites are created with the purpose of other people copying. You can not change anything and you have to leave all the links in there, but you’ll have great content.

Two sites are: ezinearticles.com and articlestogo.com 

There are others, so do a search.

Article generators are programs that takes an article and changes it around. This is legal, but by law and by rules of search engines such as Yahoo and Google.

One such program that you can buy changes the words that have more than one meaning. Another program changes the headline, first and last paragraphs.

Some people might have some moral reservation. If you do, then don’t do it. But many people don’t. if you think about it everyone does it. If you read something, it is generally copyrighted. However, what do we do as humans? We tell others what we’ve read or heard. In effect, you have generated a variation of the original copyright article.

They are well worth the price if you intent to do a lot of posting.

Two Programs a Must

While this is not exactly a secret as they are computer programs that you can find on the internet. You won’t read them in email by gurus, but I’m telling you now. I know the makers of the programs will like me doing this.

They are Super MP3 and Fast Stone Capture

Super MP3 is great for capturing streaming audio files and saving them to your computer. The cost is 30 something dollars, but well worth the price.

Have you been to sites where you can not download audio but just listen to them. Then how much will you remember after you listen to it? Well now, you can capture the audio and save it in a variety of formats on your hard drive or burn a CD and save it that way.

Simple to use.

You can also edit the recording and take out the junk if you want.

Since the recording is done right on your computer there is absolutely no loss of audio quality.

If there a video, you won’t be able to save the video but you will be able to save the audio from it.

Fast Stone Capture

Again, there are times when you can’t copy a picture (the ‘save target as’ is disabled). Now, you can take a picture of any picture you see on the net.

You can also capture ANYTHING that shows up on your screen. There might be a situation where you want to show a picture of your front page on an article you are writing. Just activate the Fast Stone Capture, click on an icon and you can size whatever section of your computer screen you want.

Then another window will pop up and you can save it as a jpg picture and give it a name.

I use both regularly.

Internet Business Tips

There’s a system that I’m trying out now that I’d like to share with you. It’s called Squidoo. There you can put all your posts together, such as videos, blogs and other things. Squidoo is made for you to make profit – and it’s free. What it is, is you come across as an expert in your topic. Naturally, you just post things on the same topic, but you can create other pages, known as ‘lens’ for other topics.

This past Thursday there was an earthquake in Cyprus that registered 4.5 on the Richter scale.  This is rare for Cyprus, but it does happen. No damage, thank God.

Ways to keep track and never lose what you bought

It’s easy to lose track with the programs you buy on the internet. If you buy more than one, it can really get confusing. You have product x where you lost the password to it. You have product t where you don’t recall what it does, etc., etc.

Some Helpful Tips

As soon as you sign up for a program, make a file that has your login name and password. Also put in the file all the other info you gave the company, such as your email, street address, etc.

Title of the file: Password (name of product)

I always start the file name with the word ‘Password’ this way it’s easy to find.
Do this before you continue on with the program, as you might forget.

Email Account

When you get a copy for payment, the thank you letter, other email from the company you bought a product from put all of them in a folder that you created on your email site. If you have Yahoo, you might have made a folder named ‘Save’ or ‘Paid Program’.

If you have created a folder like this, do so now. Then when you get something from a company you can click the boxes and transfer them into the ‘Save’ folder. This way they will be in one safe place. If you don’t do this, it would be easy to delete them by mistake or you can’t find them being mixed with all the other email.

Folder on Your Computer

If you bought a program called Twitter Magic, for example, make a folder on your computer called Twitter Magic and put all your correspondence in that folder. It could include such things as:

Password file
Letters back and forth from Support
Copy of their website
Notes on what you wrote from the video/books
Downloads of that product

Another variation

Make a folder called Paid Programs and under that make a sub-folder of each program you’ve purchased. If you have purchased 5 or 10 programs over time they would all be together under one larger folder. This would be easy to copy and make a back up without forgetting any program.

This will be all organized and separate from all the other programs you’ve ordered.

Make sure you make a back up of all files like this and put it on:

Memory stick
CD
External hard drive

The more sources you have to back up your valuable files, the better.

You never know what may happen to your computer. And by putting the CD, memory stick in different parts of your house, or even in another location, you protect if from fire and thief.

You’ve all heard about the lottery winners and how they lost millions in a couple of years.

Even if you don’t have much money, if you don’t know how to hang on to it, you’ll never become rich.

You just don’t become a millionaire; it’s something that is learned. For those who don’t realize that, IF the get money (usually by inheritance or lottery winning) they won’t have their money long.

All the gurus teach amount making money but they don’t teach about holding on to it.

Don’t believe me?

Look at the luxury cars and big homes they buy with their first million.
